“Sounds of Music” is an informal and flexible musical event. Participants are encouraged to share their love of music through listening, performing, singing, and discussing musical interests. While the nature of the program is recreational, it is inspired by music therapy programs offered by Dr. Concetta Tomaino. These operate according to principles fundamental to her therapeutic approach: acknowledging each individual; providing opportunities for participation; encouraging the sharing of musical memories; and creating friendly and inclusive opportunities for social interaction. While celebrating the unique qualities of every individual, we embrace commonality through sharing musical experiences.

Jeremy Deliotte, an experienced moderator, guides the program. Its directions are flexible and include vocal and instrumental performance, conversation about favorite tunes, ensemble listening, and the introduction of unique musical genres. Participants are invited to bring their instruments. Dr. Concetta Tomaino, a distinguished music therapist, executive director of the Institute for Music and Neurologic Function, and CUNY adjunct professor, will participate via Zoom.

Our program was born from teamwork that originated in Digital Humanities classes at the Graduate Center during 2021-2022. We are grateful to Professors Matt GoldJ. Bret Maney, and our fellow DH students for their support. This is the fifth of six “Sounds of Music” programs made possible by a grant from the DGSC for this academic year.
